THE ELEPHANT PLAY Spotlight: Kelly O’Donnell

Our workshop of The Elephant Play may be over (for now), but we’re not done spotlighting the creative team! Next up is Kelly O’Donnell, the lead artist and director of The Elephant Play. The questions are inspired by the play—stay tuned for updates on next steps for this gorgeous work-in-progress.
Do you have a favorite fact about elephants? If so, please share it.
They have beautiful eyelashes.
Who is your favorite fictional pachyderm?
Does Mr. Snuffleupagus count?
Did you ever met an elephant in real life? If so, what was it like?
I never had a chance to interact closely with one yet but once, when I was a kid, I was staying in a hotel with my father near the midtown tunnel. I remember looking out the window at the street below and seeing an elephant emerge from the tunnel. I thought I was hallucinating but it was, not one, but a couple dozen elephants of different ages walking out of the tunnel and down 34th street. I told my father and he didn’t believe me. I learned several years later that this was a tradition when Ringling Brothers Circus came to town until about ten years ago.
Elephants are fabled to never forget. What’s your memory like these days?
Selective?
Have you ever felt separated from your herd?
Constantly. I have a huge family and I’m the only one living in New York.
Do you have anything coming up that you want us to shout out on social?
I’ll be directing a summer intensive theatre camp at Two Rivers Theatre in NJ for the month of July!
