God Splat spotlight: Alisha Spielmann

We’re thrilled to continue spotlighting the creative team for God Splat (or Love and Death in Nine Parts) by Adam Szymkowicz with Flux Creative Partner Alisha Spielmann! Alisha’s recent Flux credits include Rebecca Roman Redd at the Most Dangerous Hour and Polly, a dumbshow for smart people desperate to survive the fallout, as well as many other Flux projects, including some with shorter titles. The questions are inspired by Adam’s beautiful play—make sure to RSVP for the 6/3 reading in NYC!

Have you ever been a deity of the dance floor? Where were you and what song was playing when it happened?
I don’t know if I’ve ever been a deity per se, but I had an uncle and aunt who got married the day before I turned 9 years old. During the reception, they called me to the stage and the whole room sang happy birthday to me, and then after the lead singer (yes there was an actual band) made me dance with him onstage to Great Balls of Fire. It was… something I’ll never forget.
What’s inflating your balloon these days? (Giving you purpose, joy, fuel to keep going)
I’m looking forward to some travel plans I have in store for this summer! Oh but also currently obsessed with crawfish.
If love is a borrowed car, what’s your love’s make and model?
I’ve always wanted to own a light blue (series 200 I think) Volvo, the real boxy kind that came popular in the 70’s and 80’s.
How do you keep going when the art you make goes splat?
I think all art goes splat when it’s being made, it’s part of the process. Breathing through it, maybe letting some bits here and there go, perhaps stepping away from it for a bit, and then coming back knowing that you will continue on to the other side with that new layer is what makes it uniquely yours.
How can people follow your work?
My website is alishaspielmann.com though my instagram is where I’m generally keep most up to date: @shaspiels.
